Combine an old pool table, a good Pennsylvania lager, and two award winning electrical engineers and what do you get? An industry leading technology company. Well, not right away, but that’s how it started for BuLogics, Inc.

While playing pool in their basement in 2003, Drexel University electrical engineering graduate students Ryan Buchert and Dr. Michael Balog conceptualized
a shared vision of harnessing complex, wireless control technologies and then developing them into easy-to-use solutions that would make people’s lives simpler. They recognized a unique opportunity if they could apply their wireless control inventions to wireless energy technology standards that would eventually become the most widely accepted, Z-Wave and ZigBee. Not your typical poolroom banter. But oddly enough, that conversation spawned a company that would eventually become one of the darlings of CES 2010, the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow.

However, success certainly didn’t come easy, or quickly. It took the addition of a business savvy CEO, the wooing of some top notch engineers, a laser sharp focus on energy monitoring and control products, and some serious elbow grease to really get things moving. It also took some tinkering and fixing of other people’s products as an international test house. A variety of complex wireless development projects soon turned our talented engineering staff into “experts” in Z-Wave wireless technology standards. In fact, the Z-Wave Alliance (a consortium of leading companies dedicated to solidifying Z-Wave as the standard for wireless home control products) recognized this expertise in 2008 by naming BuLogics one of only two companies in the world to test and certify products for compliance with the Z-Wave standard.

And then something really exciting happened – Smart Grid technology. With the introduction of the Smart Grid and technology needed to support it, we experienced a “Eureka” moment. We realized there would be numerous benefits if someone could connect competing Z-Wave and ZigBee standards to Smart Grid technology. So we did just that! We developed an innovative solution connecting the two technologies via a revolutionary bridge, and leapfrogged our competition in the process. In November of 2009, we introduced the world’s first Smart Grid Home Controller, a Z-Wave wireless controller offering flexible connectivity to any wireless standard.

So where does that leave us today? We now have a pool table in our office.
